No dia 20 de setembro de 1835, inicia a rebelião mais longa do período regencial, que ensangüentou o sul do Brasil. Circunstâncias históricas, sociais e econômicas e a estreita relação dos gaúchos com o Uruguai, contribuíram para que o sul conservasse a autonomia em relação ao governo do Império.
