Foi em homenagem ao nascimento do agrônomo pernambucano João Vasconcelos Sobrinho que 28 de abril se tornou o Dia da Caatinga. Um dos mais reconhecidos ecólogos brasileiros, Sobrinho foi responsável pelos primeiros estudos sobre o bioma e, ainda na década 70, sobre o processo de desertificação – problema que até os dias de hoje persiste e cresce na região.
